Minister Locatelli: 19 Years Since the Adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Minister Locatelli’s message on the 19th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention:

"Nineteen years have passed since the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This document is not merely a guide or a set of orientations: it is a binding international treaty, signed and ratified by over 193 countries, including Italy, which transposed it into law in 2009.

The core principles of the Convention are legal and cultural foundations that redefine the vision of disability. At its heart is the Person, with their needs, but above all with their desires and their right to choose.

Today, the Convention is cited in every act of the Ministry, in every law, and at every public event dedicated to disability. However, there is still much to be done to achieve full implementation, particularly regarding the right to Universal Accessibility.

In our country, however, through the Disability Reform and, specifically, the introduction of the 'Life Project' (Progetto di Vita), we are demonstrating in concrete terms how to operate within the spirit of the UN Convention. We aim to guarantee a better quality of life and promote real, shared change for persons with disabilities and their families."
